Does a Wind Mitigation Inspection Actually Save You Money?
Homes built to the 2001 Florida Building Code or later already qualify for a minimum 68% discount on the windstorm portion of the premium. Here is how the math actually works and where it varies by insurer.
For most Florida homes built since 2002, yes, and the floor is a large one: the Florida Department of Financial Services states plainly that homes built to the 2001 Florida Building Code or later, including the 1994 South Florida Building Code in Miami-Dade and Broward, "are automatically eligible for a minimum 68% discount on the windstorm coverage of the premium," in its Premium Discounts for Hurricane Loss Mitigation guide. That figure applies to the windstorm portion of your bill only, not your full policy.
We built the full breakdown of this into one page: the per-feature credit reference table and a checker that shows which of the seven OIR-B1-1802 questions your specific home is likely to qualify on, using only the numbers Florida actually publishes.
What if my home is older than 2001?
You are not shut out. Each of the seven questions on the OIR-B1-1802 form is scored independently, so a pre-2001 home with a hip roof, storm shutters, and a well-attached roof deck can still capture meaningful credit on those individual features, per the same DFS guide. The state's own advice is to have your insurance agent walk through, feature by feature, what your specific home would qualify for, since exact dollar amounts are set by each insurer's own filed rate tables rather than a single statewide number. Our discount checker walks through the same six questions and tells you which features are likely to count, before you call anyone.
How fast does it pay for itself?
Given a typical inspection cost of $75 to $150 (see our full cost guide) against a windstorm discount that can run into the hundreds of dollars a year on an eligible home, most homeowners recover the inspection cost within a single policy term. The exception is a home that already has no qualifying features and no plan to add any, where the inspection itself will not manufacture a discount that is not there.
Does the discount apply to my whole policy?
No. It applies to the windstorm (hurricane) portion of your homeowners premium specifically, not to fire, liability, or other coverage, per Citizens Property Insurance's own discounts page. Ask your agent to show the windstorm line item before and after the mitigation credit is applied so you can see the real dollar difference on your policy.
